TYPES OF PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS
ANTIPSYCHOTICS
Typical antipsychotics (sometimes referred to as first generation antipsychotics) are the older medications used to treat psychotic symptoms. They were not called "typical" until the newer generation of these drugs, which were called atypical antipsychotics. Warnings and adverse effects include blindness, blood sugar abnormalities, diabetes, death from liver failure, heart failure, hostility, manic reaction, involuntary movements, tremors, and suicidal thoughts.
ANTIDEPRESSANTS
These are stimulants—drugs that increase the activity of some vital process, organ, or system, especially the nervous system. These drugs are also called central nervous system stimulant. Adverse effects include anxiety, delusions, hallucinations, heart attacks, hostility, insomnia, panic attacks, paranoia, seizures, suicidal thoughts or behavior, and violent behavior.
NON-STIMULANT ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY
DISORDER MEDICATIONS
These are the older antidepressants, which are called tricyclic antidepressants. Side effects suicidal ideation, heart palpitation, sudden death vomiting, seizures, inability to sleep.
ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER MEDICATIONS
These are stimulants. Warnings and adverse effects include aggression, depression, dizziness, hallucinations, heart palpitations, insomnia, involuntary tics and twitching, moodiness, suppression of growth, psychosis, serious cardiovascular side effects and sudden death from heart attacks and strokes in those with heart problems or defects.
ANTI-DEMENTIA MEDICATIONS AND COGNITION ENHANCERS
Psychiatric medications with adverse effects such as, dizziness, nervousness, depression, confusion, changes in behavior, seizures, abnormal breathing and abnormal dreams.
ANTICONVULSANTS AND ALPHA-2 AGONISTS
These are drugs that cause the heart rate to increase and the pupils dilate, energy will be mobilized, and blood flow diverted from other non-essential organs to skeletal muscle. Anticonvulsants can cause an abnormal blood count, especially if used for a a longer period of time. Liver function also may be affected. Other side effects include being dizziness, being sleepy during the day, unsteady and experiencing poor balance. being confused, feeling nervous and headaches.
ANTI-ANXIETY MEDICATIONS (MOOD STABILIZERS)
These are drugs, such as a barbiturates, benzodiazepines, anti-depressants and beta-blockersor anti-anxiety agent, that depresses the activity of the central nervous system and is used to relieve anxiety and induce sleep. Some are known as minor tranquilizers and are classed as sedatives-hypnotics. There is a high potential for addiction, abuse and dangerous interaction with other drugs. Warnings and adverse effects include Aggressive behavior, anxiety, coma, depression, disorientation, epileptic seizures, hallucinations, hostility, irritability, liver problems, psychosis, and rage.
